Hawaii Tokai International College is more than just a college — it’s a global gateway where students from Japan, the U.S., and across the world come together to learn, grow, and build lasting connections across cultures.
By choosing HTIC, you’ve taken your first exciting step toward a future filled with opportunity. HTIC is truly a gateway to your future — a place where your ideas matter, your voice is valued, and your potential is nurtured.
When I first arrived in the United States as an international graduate student at the University of Chicago, I still remember how overwhelming everything felt. The lectures were challenging, the assignments demanding, and adjusting to an entirely new academic culture was no easy task. I had moments when I felt uncertain — even lost. But what helped me move forward were the people: classmates who studied alongside me, professors who guided me, and staff who offered support when I needed it most.
“You may come to HTIC for an education, but it’s what you carry with you — the relationships you build, the challenges you overcome, and the perspective you gain — that will shape your future.”
At HTIC, we keep our classes small for a reason: so every student can be seen, heard, and supported. Our “classroom without walls” philosophy means learning doesn’t end when the class does — it continues through real-world experiences, field trips, service learning, and one-on-one conversations. Whether you're exploring transfer plans, career goals, or simply sharing your story over lunch, our faculty and staff are here not just as educators but as partners on your journey.
“Education at HTIC goes beyond academics — it’s about discovering new ways of thinking, learning to persevere, and growing into the person you are becoming. You will face challenges, but you won’t face them alone. You’ll find a community that cares deeply about who you are and who you’re becoming.”
HTIC students consistently achieve strong outcomes — with over 80% transferring to four-year universities and a graduation rate that reflects our commitment to student success. Our programs are grounded in cross-cultural learning and peace-focused education, helping students prepare for a global society that values empathy, adaptability, and collaboration.
I began my career in international development, spending ten years with the UNDP and FAO, where I saw the importance of intercultural communication in building a sustainable future. For the past 25 years, I’ve worked in higher education, creating international programs and supporting cross-cultural learning. My academic journey started at Chuo University, continued at the University of Chicago, and led to a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Since then, I’ve served in leadership roles at institutions committed to global understanding and liberal arts. I believe education is most meaningful when it brings people together across cultures and perspectives — a value at the heart of HTIC.
