Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

August 20, 2020

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana,

As of August 18, Mayor Kirk Caldwell has announced a new set of restrictions the “Act Now Honolulu – No Social Gatherings” order. Under this order, all social gatherings are limited to 5 people or less, this includes at restaurants, outdoor attractions, museums, and movie theaters. Face coverings are still required in all indoor and outdoor public spaces. This order will remain in place for at least 28 days.

According to Hawaii News Now, under this order:

  • “’Social gatherings of any type’ are banned indoors and outdoors. By social gathering, the city means any event that brings together people from multiple households. Earlier this week, the mayor had a different definition for social gatherings, saying they were any group larger than five.
  • Groups at public and private outdoor attractions (like zoos and water parks) are limited to no more than five people. If the group is larger, the attraction must ensure the groups socially distance.
  • Group dining is also limited to no more than five people.
  • The order does not ban singing and wind instruments in spiritual services, as the mayor previously indicated. Rather, it includes rules about protections that need to be in place around those activities.
  • Employers are being urged to allow people to work at home if possible but are not required to. For those who can’t work at home, employers are being asked to stagger scheduled.

The new restrictions, as part of the so-called ‘Act Now Honolulu: No Social Gatherings’ order, will remain in place for at least 28 days. The order also extends the closures of beaches, parks and bars on Oahu.”

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana,

I hope all is well with you and your family.  I would like to provide an update regarding Fall Term 2020.

Because of the current situation with the coronavirus pandemic, we have determined that having in-person classes would be very difficult to do.

Therefore, we will, once again, provide all of our classes online for Fall Term.  All student services like academic advising and counseling will be available via email and zoom.  Your health and safety, however, is our number one priority so we hope you understand why the change was made.

In the beginning of August, we will be holding a Zoom information session to go over Fall Term where students and parents can ask questions.  Details regarding that information session will soon follow.

Thank you very much for your understanding.  Please feel free to contact the Office of Student Services (OSS@tokai.edu) or the Chancellor’s Office (htic@tokai.edu), should you have any questions.

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana,

As of July 14, face masks are required to be worn in all public spaces in O’ahu. This emergency order from the Office of the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu can be viewed at the following link: https://www.honolulu.gov/rep/site/may/may_docs/Emergency_Order_No._2020-19.pdf.

The health, success and well-being of our students is our number one priority at Hawai`i Tokai International College. We have stepped up cleanliness procedures to disinfect various common areas and bathrooms. These include, but not limited to, daily wiping down of doorknobs, tabletops, chairs, and commonly touched areas. We have installed hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the campus near entryways in the classroom area, dormitories, and administrative offices. We have rearranged the classrooms, library, and lobby area to maintain social distancing between students when they are sitting at the tables. Face masks are required to be worn upon entering the campus.

The Office of Student Services will continue to be open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The Library Learning Center will continue to be open to students Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Tutoring is offered online via Zoom from Sunday 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana,

This is to inform you that we have decided to hold the Spring and Summer 2020 Commencement Ceremony on September 12th virtually rather than in-person.  I can assure you that we considered every possible factor before we made the decision to hold the commencement virtually, but because of the restrictions that have been imposed by Governor Ige such as requiring visitors to Hawaii to self-quarantine for 14 days and also not allowing large gatherings, we believe it’s in the best interests of everyone that we hold the September 12th commencement online.

The decision to hold the commencement virtually is not the outcome we hoped for, but we look forward to the online attendance of all our spring and summer graduates, their friends and families, and our Hawaii Tokai ‘ohana.  We will follow up later with the virtual commencement invitation and details.  Should you have any questions about this decision, please do not hesitate to contact David Aller in the Office of Student Services.  I appreciate your patience and understanding of this matter.

Regards,

Gene Awakuni

Hawaii Tokai Cares!

Last week, the staff at Hawaii Tokai International College put together donations of goodie bags for the students still in Hawaii and hand delivered it to them! The goodie bags consisted of playing cards, masks, gloves, and snacks for students to have during a time when the students are all doing online classes.

Hawaii Tokai also had a barbeque for the dorm students over the weekend, which they all enjoyed. The students were also able to celebrate the Easter holiday with hunting for eggs in the library. Although we all must socially distance and remain indoors, Hawaii Tokai is always looking for ways to support our students!

Stay safe, everyone!

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana

Honolulu has announced a nighttime curfew for the three-day Easter weekend, which will start on Friday, April 10th at 11:00 p.m. and end on Monday, April 13th at 5:00 a.m.  The curfew will start at 11:00 p.m. Friday and be lifted at 5:00 a.m. each day, (Saturday, Sunday) until Monday morning.

According to Hawaii News Now, “the curfew extends to ‘anything with wheels’ on the roads ― not only cars but moped, bicycles and even scooters.  People will be able to walk in their communities, however.  Exceptions to the curfew include emergencies and first responders, driving to and from work, those making deliveries, security personnel, and people picking up medication.”

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana

This is to inform you that we have decided to postpone the June Commencement Ceremony 2020 for students completing degree requirements in the Spring and Summer Terms.  I can assure you that we considered every possible factor before we made this decision but because of the restrictions that have been imposed by Governor Ige such as requiring visitors to Hawaii to self-quarantine for 14 days and also not allowing large gatherings, we believe it’s in the best interests of everyone that we move commencement to September 12th.

I fully realize that this postponement may make it difficult for you to attend the ceremony in September but I’m hoping you will consider doing so.  Should you have any questions about this decision, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Student Services.  I appreciate your patience and understanding of this matter.

March 24, 2020 Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

March 24, 2020

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana

As the rate of coronavirus (also named COVID-19) grows and spreads to different parts of the world, we at HTIC are taking strong measures to ensure that students, faculty, and staff remain healthy and out of harm’s way.

Today, March 24, the total positive COVID-19 cases are 90 cases statewide. As recommended by the State of Hawaii Department of Health, we all need to “practice social distancing (i.e., maintaining at least 6 feet distance or 2 arm’s length from others) as well as other important infection prevention measures (e.g., wash hands, clean surfaces regularly) to prevent widespread community transmission.” For more updates, visit the State of Hawaii Department of Health.

Please view the operational changes Hawai`i Tokai International College has made:

– CP and LA classes will be held online until further notice is given. (Excluding the science laboratory course which will be held in-person with social distancing.)

– The Malama Program will continue via Zoom.

– Students who continue to live in the dorms will be issued each an individual room with no roommates, in order to comply with social distancing.

– All faculty and staff will be working from home until April 30, 2020 in accordance with Mayor Caldwell’s issuance for everyone to stay at home and work from home from March 23 to April 30, 2020.

– The library will be open, with social distancing rules applied (only around 7 students in the library at one time).

– The Office of Student Services (OSS) will be open, but also with social distancing.

– The fiscal office will be open 3/30 and 3/31 from 10 AM – 1 PM.

– Students may contact the OSS emergency phone that is operating 24/7. The phone number has been provided to all students via the email titled “Important Announcements”.

The HTIC Spring 2020 Academic Calendar is as follows:

To: Dormitory students

We are in the process of coordinating moving students, so each student is able to have their own individual room and practice social distancing.

To: CP Students

At this point, we are planning to have all our classes online. We hope everything will go back to normal in summer term. Until further notice, this is how we plan to run spring CP classes.

  1. All CP classes will be held “live” online using Zoom, which is an application that allows many people to join at the same time and have a class. Zoom is one of the most popular ways to have online classes. HTIC will do a test run before the first day of class, so look out for an email from me with the details.

  1. All CP classes will follow the usual schedule. Classes will start at 9:00 am Hawaii time. Your attendance is still important and will be recorded in accordance with the CP Attendance Policy. You must still attend your classes for the entire time. Participation and attendance will still be very important.

  1. Before each class, you will open the Zoom link that your teacher will share with you, either on Populi or Google Classroom. You will also be required to turn on your microphone and camera. The teacher will start the class at the regular scheduled time. The teacher will talk, and you also will be able to talk and listen to and see the teacher and each other. Both you and the teacher will be able to share computer screens, and you will be able to see each other.

  1. Assignments and tests will be submitted using Populi and Google Classroom. It will be similar to how we already do it. You will be expected to take the tests on your own and do your own work. Academic dishonesty rules will still apply if you are caught cheating or plagiarizing.

  1. Teachers may also use applications like Quizlet and Kahoot.

  1. Teachers will use the online resources for textbooks that have them.

  1. Classroom Without Walls will follow the usual schedule. However, it will be modified to include mostly internet research and virtual tours. You will do presentations based on your research. Presentations may be done live using Zoom or recorded.

  1. There will be one large TOE I class. It will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:50 to 4:50 pm as usual.

Please make sure that you have a working phone, laptop computer, headphones, and microphone. If you do not have all of these, please let Rose know, and they will do our best to help you.

As it gets closer to the beginning of term, your teachers will communicate with you through Populi and email. Please check your Populi and email often so you can keep up to date with the most recent news and any changes that might need to be made.

In the meantime, if you don’t have to go out, stay inside. If you do have to go out, be quick, don’t get too close to other people, and use hand sanitizer. Clean your hands regularly!

To: LA Students

As you were informed previously all our LA courses (except for SCI 122L) will be conducted online.  In response to CDC’s social distancing policy, SCI 122L will be the only class that allows 4 students who are graduating in the Spring Term to remain in the class. These 4 students should not travel outside Hawaii if they want to stay in this class.

Class registration will be re-opened for students to add or switch classes in case any of their previous classes were canceled.  Again, it will be vital to check your e-mail as all the forthcoming details and information regarding the online classes will be sent to you this way.  In addition, your instructors will also be e-mailing you course information on how to join the class on-line as well as course details.

Classes will be held utilizing Zoom, which is an application that allows students to join at the same time and have a class that runs in live time and synchronously.  Zoom is one of the most popular applications in which to have online classes.  We will have a test run before the first day of class to ensure a smooth transition for this.  Check your email as Sandra will be providing details for the on-line classes and the Zoom application.

In response to the COVID-19 health crisis, all students are instructed to practice social distancing.  Also, it is advised that you stay inside and stay home.  Please ensure you wash your hands regularly and wear a mask if you do have to go out.  Be safe, use good judgment and common sense so all of us at HTIC make it through this difficult time safe and healthy and can continue with our academic endeavors.

To Parents and Incoming Spring Term Students,

I apologize for this late notice but due to recent directives issued by Governor David Ige, we’ve decided to defer entry for new students who were to come to Hawai`i Tokai International College (HTIC) this Spring Term to the Summer Term which begins in June. This is being done in an abundance of caution. Almost on a daily basis more and more restrictions are being put in place by the State of Hawai`i that restricts the ability of visitors to travel to and from Hawaii and for people to access local services like restaurants.

Again, I apologize that we have to take this action but we’re doing so in the interest of our incoming students. Our Admissions Office will update the student visa so that there should be no problem in the new Summer Term entry.

Please feel free to contact my office or HTIC Japan Office should you have any questions.

Dear Hawai`i Tokai International College `Ohana

As the rate of coronavirus (also named COVID-19) grows and spreads to different parts of the world, we at HTIC are taking strong measures to ensure that students, faculty, and staff remain healthy and out of harm’s way.

On March 6, the Hawai`i State Department of Health (DOH) identified the first positive case of COVID-19 in Hawaii.  That individual was a passenger on the Grand Princess cruise in Mexico from February 11 to 21.  On March 8, the DOH identified a second positive case of COVID-19.  That individual felt ill after traveling home to Honolulu on March 4 from Washington State.  For the latest updates on COVID-19, visit https://health.hawaii.gov/docd/advisories/novel-coronavirus-2019/

Below are travel notices listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which can also be found at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/summary.html

  • Avoid Nonessential Travel (Level 3): China, Iran, Italy, South Korea
  • Practice Enhanced Precautions (Level 2): Japan
  • Practice Usual Precautions (Level 1): Hong Kong

For more information regarding flight cancellations or COVID-19 travel updates from airlines, please visit the following websites:

The CDC has listed the best preventive actions to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

We kindly ask for your cooperation to keep updated and stay alert of the COVID-19 situation.  We will continue to keep the Hawai`i Tokai International College `ohana updated as we work towards maintaining a safe environment for our students, faculty and staff.
